Profile of DIT – Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology
The Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) is a premier government institution in Tanzania, established in 1997 by the DIT Act No. 6 of 1997. It was set up to replace the former Dar es Salaam Technical College (DTC), which had a long-standing history of technical training in Tanzania since 1957. The evolution of DIT reflects its significant contribution to the country’s technical education and the development of a skilled workforce.
The journey of technical education in Tanzania began in 1957 with the founding of the Dar es Salaam Technical Institute. This institute was initially established to provide vocational training aimed at meeting the growing demands for skilled labor in the country. Over time, the institute expanded its mandate to include technical secondary school courses and training programs for Technical Assistants.
In 1962, the institute was upgraded to become the Dar es Salaam Technical College (DTC), marking a new chapter as the first formal technical training institution in the country. DTC’s main focus was to train technicians under the London City and Guilds Training Program. To further enhance its role in national capacity building, the college introduced a two-and-a-half-year Ordinary Technician Diploma (OTD) program in 1964.
Recognizing the need for a modern, comprehensive institution to address the technical training needs of Tanzania, the government passed the DIT Act No. 6 of 1997. This act officially established the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), transforming the former technical college into a leading institution for higher learning in applied sciences and engineering.
