Profile of Geita Gold Mining Ltd (GGML)
Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), also known as Geita Mine, is a major mining operation in Tanzania, owned by AngloGold Ashanti. Located in North-Western Tanzania within the Lake Victoria goldfields in the Geita region, the mine is approximately 120 km from Mwanza City and 4 km west of the Geita township. GGML has been a significant contributor to Tanzania’s mining sector since it commenced large-scale operations in 2000, though the Geita gold deposit has a history of mining activities dating back to the 1930s.
Overview of Geita Gold Mining Operations
The Geita Mine is an important asset for AngloGold Ashanti, serving as one of its flagship projects. The mine operates as both an open-pit and underground mining site, with substantial developments in recent years aimed at maintaining productivity and accessing new gold resources.
Mining Operations
- Current Mineral Resource: As of December 31, 2020, Geita Mine’s Mineral Resource stands at approximately 7.92 million ounces.
- Underground Development: Significant underground development has taken place, especially in the Star & Comet, Nyankanga, and Geita Hill sections. Approximately 1,555 meters of capital development have been completed, enabling access to new mining areas for stope extraction and further exploration activities into 2021.
- Open-Pit Mining: While open-pit mining at Geita Hill concluded as the deposit reached the end of its economic life, Nyankanga open-pit mining also completed in September 2020. In April 2021, GGML initiated new open-pit operations at Nyamulilima, located about 2.4 km from Star & Comet, with plans to extract one million ounces of gold over the next six years.
Power Supply at Geita Mine
The Geita Mine’s operations are supported by a 40 MW power plant, featuring four diesel generators. This power plant, commissioned in August 2018, ensures a stable electricity supply to sustain the mine’s activities. In addition to on-site power generation, plans to connect the mine to the national grid are underway. The Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (TANESCO) is in the process of supplying electricity through a 220/33kV line from Mpomvu village, situated 6 km from the mine. This connection is expected to enhance power reliability and reduce operational costs.
